Leicester Child Poverty Commission: conference 2012

Leicester Child Poverty Commission: conference 2012

Friday 25 May 2012, De Montfort University

Registration is now open – book early

27,000 children in Leicester are growing up in poverty. It is estimated that over 65% of children and young people in the city live in low income households.

This child poverty challenge in Leicester is urgent. Growing unemployment, increasing costs of living and proposed changes to benefits and tax credits makes the need to find new solutions to tackle child poverty even more important.

The Leicester Child Poverty Commission was established last year and will develop a new action plan to address and tackle child poverty in the city.

On Friday 25 May the Leicester Child Poverty Commission will host a major conference to bring together all those in the city, and from beyond, with an interest in tackling child poverty.

The conference will discuss the underlying reasons for Leicester’s high child poverty rates, the impact of the current economic situation and other factors which impact on child poverty but most importantly the day will seek ideas and input for new solutions which we can implement in the city.

This conference is aimed at individuals and organisations with an interest in tackling child poverty. We hope that policy-makers, frontline professionals and practitioners from the public sector, voluntary and community sector and the private sector will attend. The conference is free to attend, but places are limited so please book your place as soon as possible.

Our new child poverty action plan will only be effective with interventions which are joined up across all sectors and which cover all areas including family income, the economy and employment, training and adult learning, the role of schools and colleges, early years policy, health and the NHS, transport and housing.

Conference registration is now open, you can book online by clickin...

A booking form is also attached which can be printed and returned by post.

I am pleased to confirm that speakers at the conference will include Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of the Child Poverty Action Group.

Further speakers and details of the conference agenda will be announced in the coming weeks.

Please forward this invitation to colleagues or other organisations in your networks who might be interested in attending.

Yours sincerely

Rory Palmer
