There has been a sharp rise in the number of young people who have undergone Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks over the past six years, according to official figures.
More than 125,000 young people under 18 had their backgrounds checked between October 2008 and September 2009 compared with only 61,700 in 2002/2003, according
to Home Office figures. The details were published in the report An Education in Mistrust, produced by civil liberties campaigning group Manifesto Club.
The sharp increase was partly due to a change in rules that meant that young people whose parents work as childminders now have to be vetted.
"CRB checks send a damaging signal to young people, who should be encouraged to take steps in caring for others less capable than themselves," said Josie Appleton, spokeswoman for Manifesto Club.
