The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has joined forces with the NSPCC and a medical charity to train doctors in managing suspected cases of child abuse.

The RCPCH, the NSPCC and the Advanced Life Support Group have launched the Child Protection in Practice e-learning course, which will be available to doctors training in paediatrics. The organisations hope that all doctors studying paediatrics will undertake the course.

Enid Hendry, director of training and consultancy at the NSPCC, said: "Great reliance is placed on the skills and judgment of paediatricians to ensure the right decisions are made when child abuse or neglect is suspected. This authoritative new training programme will help them play their critical role with increased confidence and knowledge and help ensure children get better protection."

Lord Laming, who investigated child protection services in England in the wake of the Baby P case in Haringey, welcomed the introduction of the course.

He said: "Throughout my career I have never been in any doubt of the importance of the specialist skills of paediatricians and the work they do day by day in protecting children and supporting families.

"This new course will enable them to strengthen not only their competence, but also their confidence, in contributing their unique knowledge and skills to the multi-skilled team work that is essential to success in safeguarding children and young people."
