LETTER TO ME FROM STEPHEN DORRELL MP - REFERENCE PRIVATE LAW AND PAS

Thank you for your recent e-mail about David Macleans Early Day Motion 373 Relocation Cases.
I sympathize with your concerns, and with the intentions behind this EDM, it is heartbreaking for Parents when their ex-spouse relocates, and takes the children with them as in most cases children benefit substantially from contact with both parents.
It is right that this issue is brought to the attention of Parliament.

When families break down, both parents, and their families should have access to their children if at all possible.
I also believe that in family disputes the courts should be the last, not the first resort for parents who separate.
Mediation should as far as possible, always be the first step, there should be a strong presumption in favour of equal rights for parents to influence the upbringing of their children, unless the safety of the child is in question, it is important to promote ,and value the role of fatherhood, and harness, and encourage voluntary groups, and other bodies that promote fatherhood.
My colleague Henry Bellingham MP , Shadow Minister for Legal Services, is looking into the operation of the Children, and Family Court Advisory Support Service CAFCASS,and the legal framework under which the courts currently operate, he has recently met up with the Family Law Bar Association, Bar Council, and numerous individual practitioners,, it is vitally important that people who rely on the family justice system have confidence in its decision.
I believe it is right that my colleagues are discussing this very sensitive issue with experts, given that they are doing so, i do not want to pre-empt any decision made by them, and will not therefore be signing the EDM.
Thank you for writing. Stephen Dorrell MP.

I have not yet replied.
