Proposed changes to Family Law

The Children and Families Bill was announced in the Queen’s speech this month.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the Bill will aim to:

  • ‘make it easier for (separating) parents to share their caring responsibilities’
  • encourage parents to ‘work together to reach agreements about their child’s care’
  • ‘set out that, where it is safe and in the best interests of the child, both parents should be involved with their child’s upbringing as fully as possible’.

The Ministry of Justice will announce a consultation on legislative change soon.

In Australia, an emphasis in law on shared care has proved to be harmful to women and children.

In Australia, new legislation will be introduced on 7th June 2012 to give priority to a child’s safety in determining what is in the best interests of the child, and to broaden the definition of ‘family violence’ and ‘abuse’.

Maypole works to promote safety in UK family law. Watch out for how you can contribute to the UK consultation via our newsletter and social media.
