Press Release.

22 Decmber 2012

Grandparents apart UK congratulate Johann Lamont MSP and the member MSPs who have supported her on  the motion S3M-7259   Support for Children
(Kinship Care) which looks very promising for the best interests of children in
the Scottish Parliament about the role Grandparents and Kinship cares play in
children’s lives. It is very heartening to know that there is a party that cares
about the welfare of children and politics come second.

The Charter for Grandchildren started out as the Charter for Grandparents. The Grandparents was substituted for Grandchildren because it really was for the best interests of the children. N.B.

Because of our heavy lobbying of the government at the time in 2005 Cathy Jamieson Scottish Justice Minister recognised the need for grandparents to be recognised more for caring for
children keeping them in a stable home environment and early detection of abuse
because of the intimate knowledge of their own family’s
shortcomings.

The Charter for Grandchildren is a family friendly charter it does not give grandparents any power over parents to tell them how to rear their own children but it ensures that the huge benefit
grandparents can be, cannot be denied to children who are in need of kinship
care. Grandparents do not need legal rights but the children need the right to
be mandatory to have the best their grandparents can offer.

Social services claim they already carry out what is contained in the Charter for Grandchildren but we have had thousands of grandparents call us to say they have not been considered. They also claim what
is in the Charter for Grandchildren is already covered in other children’s laws.
In our experience these laws have not been recognised at all and the need to
focus the laws in one legal document is a must for easy recognition and
policing. Professionals who work in the welfare of children are just like
everyone else when it comes to high pressure in the work place rubberstamping is
easier than exercising proper procedure and this cannot be tolerated when the
welfare of children is at stake.

Ends.
