Three years ago I had a very brief (48 hours) episode of mental illness whilst in hospital. It was later decided that this was probably brought on by the medication that I was being given for heart problems (beta blockers) and the extreme stress of being in a coronary care unit.
The psychiatrist I saw at the time sees no reason for me to be on a mental health register, I recovered quickly and have had no further problems with my mental health.
Despite this, my GP practice and local health authority have informed me that I am on the mental health register for life. I am very upset about this. I feel that I have effectively been punished for complying with my treatment and having an adverse reaction to beta-blockers.
Although my GP states that she has my best interests at heart, I feel that my individual situation is not being taken into account. In addition, being on the register is preventing me from having closure with a bad experience. Do hope you can help.
