I have been advising on two cases where Social Services have been involved with the families because their children have been defined as autistic, in one case, a mother was being physically punched and hit by her 14 year old son,and was attacked by him, due too her having two younger children she asked for help from the Local Authority, she was frightened for the safety of her younger children, and placed her autistic son into voluntary care, within a week Social Workers turned up at her door, and stated that they were going to instigate a child protection investigation, and that she could possibly have her two other children taken into care, luckily PAIN advised on the case, and the mother managed to keep her other children, the older boy has been placed with his maternal Grandparents, Mum and other siblings have regular contact.
The family have moved too a different area within the Country, and have no further involvement with the LA, only input with them over her autistic son.
Be careful about asking for help, they could try and take your other children.
The second case involves a friend of mine, who i have known since her son was 2 years of age.
He was diagnosed by a Psychiatrist and CAMHS, with severe autism, he was selectively mute, and would talk only within the home environment, of which i have witnessed.
The child's bizarre behavior became worse after the age of 7, he started to become violent towards his mother, and began to headbutt her, she is a single mother and felt that she needed respite care.
Social Services became involved because of the issue, and found a childrens home where he could be placed two days a month, so mum could have a rest.
The mother went out one weekend and met a man, and had him in the house while her son was in bed.
The man attacked and raped my friend, i am not judging her about having the man in the house, in the first place, she telephoned the police, and because she was involved with Social Services, the boys name was placed on the child protection register, because at the time of the rape, the boy was asleep in bed.
His name was removed from the child protection register six months later, on all occasions the Social Worker was blaming the child's behavior on mums poor parenting skills, and even suggested that he was not autistic.
Mum placed him into voluntary care at the age of 14 because he was getting into the electrical cables and plugs at night, and one occasion pulled a light down off the ceiling, she panicked rang the Social Worker out of worry that if he electrocuted himself, she would be prosecuted for neglect.
At a family court hearing i read a care plan, which stated that the child was at risk of hurting himself, and other people, i mentioned too the Social Worker that they failed in their duties, and should have taken the boy into care, if they considered him to be at risk, in other words mum did the dreaded dead for them, by pacing her son into voluntary care.
He was placed into a short term unit, and was then placed with so called dedicated foster carers, who regularly looked after special needs children, the Social Worker even stated the placement would prove that mums poor parenting skills would prove that she was to blame for the whole predicament.
The foster care placement lasted 6 weeks after in so many words he wrecked the house, he has now been placed into a long term residential unit, the Social Worker has limited mums contact to once a month, because she failed to attend a couple of contact sessions, due to illness, the whole experiance has left her traumatized and she is a pittance of her former self, with regards too her outgoing bubbly personality.
The boy has not spoken a word, since he left his mothers care just over two years ago.
